An appeal from Hon. Life President: Joe Passmore.
Minehead museum is thriving! Set up seven years ago to encourage interest in Minehead’s history, it has grown in expertise, exhibits, and in visits by residents and visitors, with over 48,000 visitors since opening. The museum has provided an educational opportunity for class and group visits and has provided visitors with an insight into the history and culture of the town. Indeed we even provide a much needed wet weather facility for tourists and we all know that heritage tourists contribute to the local economy.
All this has been achieved by you, the volunteers and supporters who have invested so much time and energy into getting us to where we are. We have been exceptionally fortunate in having the support of the YMCA, (owners of the Beach Hotel) who continue to provide premises at a peppercorn rent., but on a short-term licence.
We are attracting more and better exhibits which either need to be on show or stored in safe conditions for future use. We also need space for visitors to circulate freely. We are at the stage where we need to guarantee the long term future of the museum and the unique collection of artefacts.
From the start we have always recognised the need for a long term secure home. Suitable premises have now become available in Minehead, large enough space for more displays and to welcome larger numbers of visitors, especially school groups, which we cannot accommodate at present, along with vital storage and conservation space at the rear.
To obtain grant support we need to show that we have good support from Minehead residents and businesses. So we are asking for your help. No matter how large or small, we need donations, to show grant-givers that enough local people value the museum and the preservation and interpretation of Minehead’s heritage and culture.
Your donations will help secure the future of the museum. Donations over £1000 will be recorded on a donor board. You can help create the financial reserve that could trigger match funding grants. We have been fortunate so far in attracting a number of donations over £1000, including two of £5000.
Please give generously to help Minehead Museum acquire a permanent home, and be part of this local success story.
