In 2020 we learned of the passing of Oliver Davies.
A founder member and first Chair of Minehead Conservation Society, Oliver was an enthusiastic advocate for the need for a Museum in Minehead. His enthusiasm drew together a team who rose to the challenge and the Museum opened in March 2014.
Also a gifted concert pianist and musicologist, Oliver was keen on historical research relating to Minehead, and an authority on the Victorian and Edwardian architect that helped shape the town.
Oliver has left the Museum some 5000 images, including many that are not reflected in the Museum’s existing archive; this includes a number of rare, early photographs by Arthur Vowels (1882–1965), renowned for his photography of Exmoor and the surrounding area, and who for many years had a thriving business selling postcards of his work from a shop in Minehead.
