News Item- Meeting for Stewards and Potential Stewards

organised by Friends of Minehead Museum

Wednesday 28th Febuary @ 10.00pm at the Beach Hotel

All welcome!

This is a chance for stewards to see progress on this year's display 'Minehead on the Move', and discuss implications of other changes to the museum for the coming season.

Whether you are here for your holidays or living nearby, there is something of interest for everyone, here at our unique museum in The Beach Hotel, opposite Minehead’s Steam Railway station. The museum is closed at present but will re-open again towards the end of March 2018.

Experience the fascinating history of Minehead and Alcombe and discover the history of the Hobby Horse, the famous Swimming Pool, The Great Fire, world-famous author, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the Lifeboats and the Pier, which was dismantled in WW2. Plus many other exhibits.

We are pleased that Minehead U3A members are contributing again this year (2017/18) via another ‘Shared Learning Project’ ; the theme will be ‘Minehead on the Move’, exploring the ways in which trains, boats, planes and car - and more - have changed the face of the Town. Results of this project will be ready for the Museum’s 2018 Season

Held at the Minehead Social Club on Friday , 19th January, the quiz and raffle raised over £300 towards the costs of the coming season. Sandra Slade set the questions for the evening and husband Peter was the question master. Twelve teams battled it in a highly enjoyable evening, with the winning team "Cosmopolitans" presented with their prizes.

Latest Museum booklet

Minehead Museum trustee, Caroline Giddens, has just published her latest book, Education and Schools in Minehead and Alcombe. Research, combined with her own youthful experience of local schools, makes this a fascinating account of education and schools in this area, from Victorian times up to the present day. The author has drawn on old school yearbooks and logbooks, and her own memories will surely strike a chord with those readers who spent their own schooldays in Minehead or Alcombe. You may even find your younger self in one of the class photographs. This book is a valuable contribution to our further understanding of Minehead’s rich social history and sells at £5.00.

Other booklets in the series are listed here.
